THE POSITION—We’re looking for a year-round, full-time Certified Marine Technician I, an entry-level marine technician who can perform basic mechanical and troubleshooting tasks to an exceptionally high standard.

PAY: Commensurate with experience, with a range of $18–$28 per hour.

Boyne Boat Yard is a full-service marine yard on the Van Dam campus in Boyne City, Michigan. We work on a wide range of recreational boats—everything from wooden boats, including Van Dam power and sailboats, to 55’ sport yachts and cruisers. Duties and Responsibilities


  • Perform routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting on marine systems including engines, electrical, potable and sanitation systems.
  • Effectively complete tasks up to 8 hours long while tracking time and communicating progress.
  • Perform all work to ABYC standards and report non-conformities with recommendations.
  • Conduct seasonal maintenance: fall decommissioning and spring commissioning.
  • Lake test boats and document all work in detail.
  • Maintain basic knowledge of marine systems and seek out training opportunities.
  • Test and adjust systems to manufacturer performance specifications.
  • Support safe boating—put the customer’s safety and satisfaction first.
  • Assist with boat hauling, launching, and standing using travel lifts and trailers.
  • Comfortably use a variety of shop tools and maintain an organized tool inventory.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and contribute to a collaborative team environment.
  • Uphold a safe and clean work environment with strong attention to detail.

Qualifications and Requirements


  • Certifications: ABYC Systems Certification required; Volvo, NMEA, and HVAC certifications are a plus.
  • Experience: 1 year marine technician experience or relevant vocational training.
  • Technical Knowledge: Experience with diesel engines, generators, drivetrains, electronics, plumbing, HVAC, and stabilization systems is a plus.
  • License: Valid driver's license with clean record.
  • Background: Must pass a background check.
  • Physical: Able to lift 50 lbs, climb ladders, work in and around boats in all weather conditions.
